KIA, PDF torch Bamauk in fresh assault
Myanmar’s military has accused ethnic armed groups of setting fires in Bamauk town as government forces advance to retake the area in Sagaing Region. The army said opposition fighters from the Kachin Independence Army and People’s Defense Forces torched homes and government buildings on Saturday while troops moved within two kilometers of the town.
The military launched operations to reclaim Bamauk after insurgents seized control on September 20. Soldiers are working to extinguish blazes and prevent flames from spreading to nearby residences while pursuing remaining fighters.
Armed groups have controlled parts of Sagaing Region since launching attacks in November 2023. The military claims opposition forces use civilian infrastructure as bases and have planted mines on roads and bridges throughout the region.
