Kiran Rao on ‘Laapataa Ladies’ authentic design
Filmmaker Kiran Rao, whose directorial Laapataa Ladies won 13 Filmfare Awards, discussed the film’s production design and art direction. Rao emphasized the importance of creating a textured world that reflected the beauty of Indian villages without making it overly glamorous or culturally specific. She and production designer Vikram Singh spent six months researching and designing the world of the film.
Rao explained that they aimed to capture villages on the cusp of change, neither too remote nor stuck in the past. The visual research included studying photographs from the past 20 years and exploring local art forms, especially traditional paintings on village homes. The film, presented by Jio Studios, is produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande under Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions.
