Kluivert exits as Indonesia coach after World Cup failure

Patrick Kluivert stepped down as Indonesia’s head coach shortly after the team’s World Cup qualifying hopes ended. He had been appointed in January on a two-year contract to help Indonesia reach the World Cup for the first time since 1945.

Indonesia’s losses to Saudi Arabia and Iraq last week ended their qualification campaign. The Football Association of Indonesia announced that both Kluivert and the coaching team mutually agreed to end the contract.

In a social media message, Kluivert took responsibility for the defeats, acknowledging the bitter lessons learned. He had replaced South Korean coach Shin Tae-yong, leading a squad mostly made up of naturalized players from Europe.
