Labour experts demand urgent reforms to Bangladesh Labour Act
Experts on workers’ rights want big changes to Bangladesh’s Labour Act, 2006. They say union rights need to match global standards and all workers should be free to join unions. The push came up at a meeting in Dhaka held by the Solidarity Centre. Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed, head of the Labour Reform Commission, spoke out, saying their ideas were ignored even though they held wide talks to create them.
Khandaker Shafin Habib Shan from the Solidarity Centre suggested lowering the number of workers needed to form a union, making it easier for workers to organize. He also stressed the need for fair checks on union numbers. Others, like Sunzida Sultana, argued that the law must cover informal workers, mostly women.
