MPO-listed teachers threaten hunger strike over demands in Dhaka protest
Teachers and employees of MPO-listed educational institutions have issued an ultimatum, demanding their three-point list of demands be met by 11 am on Wednesday. They threatened to start a hunger strike after a march to the chief adviser’s official residence if their requests are not addressed.
Delwar Hossain Azizi, member secretary of the MPO-listed Education Nationalisation Expectant Alliance, made the announcement on Tuesday after police blocked their planned “Long March” to the Secretariat. The three demands are: raising house rent allowance to 20% of the basic salary, increasing medical allowance to Tk1,500 for both teachers and employees, and boosting the festival allowance for non-teaching staff to 75%.
The teachers had initially postponed their march, but after being stopped by police at the High Court intersection, they vowed to continue their protest. Previous demonstrations saw police use sound grenades, water cannons, and batons to disperse crowds. The movement has gained support from several organizations, including political parties and student groups.
