Leftist parties refuse to sign July Charter over key concerns

Several leading leftist parties in Bangladesh are likely to avoid signing the July Charter, set to be signed on Friday by representatives of most political groups. The National Consensus Commission (NCC) sent the final draft of the charter to 32 political parties, including these leftist groups, on Tuesday.

The Left Democratic Alliance, Communist Party of Bangladesh, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BASAD), BASAD-Marxist, Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, and Gonoforum have raised concerns over various clauses and officially stated they will not sign the document, which aims to shape the country’s political and economic future.

Masud Rana, Coordinator of BASAD-Marxist, said that key points in the charter, particularly the pledge to fully implement the document, are problematic for parties with “Notes of Dissent.” He questioned how a charter with differing views could be incorporated into the constitution. CPB’s General Secretary, Abdullah Al Kafi Ratan, also rejected the charter, citing the lack of a clear plan for its implementation. The leftist parties are planning to meet soon to finalize their position.
