Maduro says Venezuela armed with missiles
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced on Wednesday that his military possesses 5,000 Russian surface-to-air missiles positioned at air defense sites. The weapons are Igla-S systems designed to target low-altitude aircraft. Maduro displayed the arsenal at a televised ceremony attended by military commanders, as Washington maintains naval and air forces in Venezuelan waters.
The United States deployed stealth aircraft and warships to the Caribbean under counter-narcotics operations and destroyed eight vessels carrying drugs from Venezuela. Pentagon officials told Congress that America faces armed conflict with Latin American cartels and designated suspected smugglers as unlawful combatants. Regional leaders criticized the military presence as preparation for removing Maduro from power.
President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that maritime drug trafficking had declined sharply and indicated a willingness to strike land-based smuggling operations. Colombia withdrew its ambassador from Washington after disputes between President Gustavo Petro and Trump. Military experts questioned the legality of destroying vessels without due process, even when trafficking evidence exists.
