Mahamuni temple hosts robe weaving ceremony

Mandalay’s regional leader joined military and judicial officials on Sunday morning to launch the 36th traditional overnight robe weaving ceremony at the Mahamuni Buddha Image shrine.

Chief Minister U Myo Aung participated in ribbon-cutting alongside the Central Command leader and the top judge from Mandalay Region High Court. U Mya Win, who chairs the temple’s trustee board, welcomed cabinet ministers and guests to the event. After the formal proceedings, government representatives observed weavers beginning their work and spoke with volunteers and garment makers about the process. Officials noted the cloth would be completed through the night and presented to the statue during this morning’s Tazaungmone full moon ceremonies.

The Matho Thingan tradition involves teams racing against time to finish religious robes between dusk and dawn for presentation at Buddhist shrines. Mandalay’s historic Mahamuni temple has hosted this annual competition for more than three decades as part of festival observances marking one of Myanmar’s most significant lunar celebrations.
