Prime minister leads robe donation at monastery

Myanmar’s prime minister joined government staff at a Buddhist monastery south of the capital on Monday morning to present ceremonial robes during an annual merit-making event.

U Nyo Saw attended the Ministry of National Planning’s Kathina donation ceremony at Masoeyein Monastery in Pyinmana alongside his spouse Daw San San Aye and ministerial colleagues with their families. The group received Buddhist precepts from Bhaddanta Revata, the monastery’s chief monk, before hearing religious teachings from assembled clergy. The prime minister and his wife then gave cloth offerings to senior monks from both Masoeyein and Aung Mingalar monasteries.

Other participants presented similar gifts to the religious figures gathered for the observance. Following the presentations, U Nyo Saw’s party shared blessings earned through their charitable acts and provided midday meals to the monks. The Kathina ceremony takes place annually during the month following Buddhist Lent and allows devotees to gain spiritual merit through donations of robes and other necessities to monastic communities.
