Malaysian experts urge Wisma Putra to uphold Myanmar stance

A group of Malaysian academics and policy experts today urged Wisma Putra to stand firm on its position regarding Myanmar. They expressed concern over a report in a junta-run newspaper that misquoted Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, suggesting he supported Myanmar’s planned elections.

The Myanmar Expert Study Group and the Malaysian Advisory Group on Myanmar said the junta’s planned elections were a “sham,” as they would not be free or fair. They emphasized that Malaysia’s focus should remain on humanitarian aid and ending violence, as outlined in Asean’s Five-Point Consensus.

The groups also called for Malaysia to engage with all parties in Myanmar, not just the junta. They condemned recent violence and urged Malaysia to keep its principled stance in Asean.
