Masood Azhar in hiding, JeM struggles without leadership

Masood Azhar, the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), has reportedly gone into hiding following Operation Sindoor, which significantly weakened his outfit. Azhar’s family was also severely impacted during the operation, and he is believed to be under close surveillance by both the Indian armed forces and the Pakistan Army.

Without Azhar and his brother Rauf Azghar, the JeM’s leadership has faltered, leaving many cadres disillusioned. In the past, when Azhar was unavailable, Azghar would step in to lead operations, but his death in Bahawalpur was a major blow to the group. To maintain morale, the JeM has been circulating news about expanding its operations, like opening a women’s wing, though it is reportedly rebuilding and cautious of any further conflicts with India.

Indian agencies warn that while JeM may not take direct action, it has been intensifying its propaganda, using AI-generated videos to bolster Azhar’s image and keep the cadres motivated. Despite this, the uncertainty within the JeM and its dissatisfaction with the changing dynamics in Pakistan, particularly its strained relations with the Taliban, may lead to internal unrest or defections. The ISI, however, is cautious, knowing that any attack on India could provoke a strong response under India’s new defense strategy.
