Mikel Merino scores twice as Spain beat Bulgaria 4-0

Mikel Merino scored twice as Spain secured a 4-0 victory over Bulgaria in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier, maintaining their perfect record in Group E. Merino opened the scoring with a header in the 35th minute and added another in the 56th.

Bulgaria’s misery grew when defender Atanas Chernev scored an own goal in the 79th minute. Mikel Oyarzabal then sealed the win with a penalty in added time after Merino was fouled in the box.

Spain remains top of the group with 12 points from four matches, scoring 15 goals and conceding none. They will face Georgia and Turkey in their final qualifiers, needing just a few more points to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
