US-India expert Ashley Tellis arrested for retaining top-secret documents

Ashley Tellis, a prominent expert on US-India relations and former adviser to US administrations, has been arrested and charged with unlawfully retaining national defense information. Court documents revealed that over a thousand pages of top-secret and secret documents were found at his home.

Tellis, 64, is also accused of meeting with Chinese officials several times since 2023. He previously served on the National Security Council under President George W. Bush and is a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

The FBI affidavit details Tellis accessing classified documents at Defense and State Department buildings and leaving with them. A search of his home in Virginia uncovered the documents. If convicted, Tellis faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
