Min Aung Hlaing warns illegal trade aids armed groups

Myanmar’s military leader condemned illicit cross-border commerce that sustains armed groups while depriving the government of legitimate tax revenues. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing told officials and community representatives in Mawlamyine that certain security personnel and ethnic organizations with peace agreements have participated in smuggling operations for personal gain. Border checkpoint closures resulted from deteriorating stability, he explained during discussions about Mon State infrastructure improvements.

Authorities plan increased lending from state economic funds targeting agricultural and manufacturing ventures. The commander highlighted that Myanmar loses approximately eight billion dollars annually from suboptimal crop yields, urging farmers to boost per-acre productivity. Frozen seafood and meat exports could significantly advance national economic objectives, he noted.

Regional development efforts include waterfront pedestrian upgrades along Mawlamyine’s shoreline, airport expansion to accommodate additional carriers, and railway modernization. Mon State will establish polytechnic training centers for students who failed matriculation examinations or completed only basic schooling, creating employment pathways in production sectors.
