Myanmar backs Belt and Road disaster talks in China
The 2025 Belt and Road Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Management is being held in Hainan, China, from November 5 to 7, with Myanmar’s Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, Dr. Soe Win, in attendance. Ministers and senior officials responsible for disaster management from Belt and Road countries are participating in the event, which serves as a forum for exchanging experiences, developing strategies for disaster preparedness, and sharing best practices. Dr. Soe Win highlighted that the council provides a valuable platform to address disaster risk reduction, emergency relief, and occupational safety, aligning with building a resilient society. He also expressed support for the conference theme focused on creating a rapid and efficient emergency rescue mechanism and confirmed Myanmar’s commitment to joint activities in this area.
During the conference, Dr. Soe Win met separately with Wang Xiangxi, Minister of Emergency Management of China and Chairman of the Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Management, to discuss strengthening cooperation in emergency response, search and rescue operations, early warning systems, and information sharing. Dr. Soe Win thanked China for its assistance following the Mandalay earthquake, noting the longstanding friendship between the two nations. He also responded to questions from Chinese media after the meeting.
