Myanmar health boss woos Gavi elites

Union Minister for Health Dr Thet Khaing Win met a delegation led by Ricard Lacort Monte, Senior Country Manager of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), along with representatives from the World Health Organization and UNICEF in Nay Pyi Taw. The meeting occurred at the Ministry of Health’s headquarters and included discussions on Myanmar’s immunization efforts and the Gavi 6.0 funding application.

Dr. Thet Khaing Win said the Department of Public Health is conducting routine and catch-up vaccination campaigns nationwide, including in Kyaukme, Hsipaw, and Nawnghkio townships, which were formerly affected by conflict. Special programs target children under 15, and no outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases have been reported following the Mandalay earthquake. He stressed that pregnant women and children are receiving scheduled vaccines under state leadership and thanked GAVI, WHO, UNICEF, related ministries, and regional governments for their support.

The meeting also included the deputy minister, director-general, deputy permanent secretary, Expanded Programme on Immunization officials, and international agency representatives.
