Myanmar rights chief cozies up to Russia

Myanmar National Human Rights Commission Chairman U Paw Lwin Sein joined representatives from more than 60 countries at the Ninth International Scientific and Practical Conference on Human Rights in the Digital Age, held in Moscow from October 22 to 24. He emphasized that digital technology is now deeply embedded in daily life and stressed the need to uphold rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights within digital systems.

Myanmar has enacted the Telecommunications Law and the Cybersecurity Law to shield citizens’ personal data, he said. The commission also launched a learning management system, a mobile app, and a website to accept public complaints online as part of its move toward e-governance.

U Paw Lwin Sein met Russian Human Rights Commissioner Professor Tatiana Moskalkova, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation and toured the Russian commission’s headquarters. He also held talks with delegations from Indonesia, Sudan, Nepal and Sri Lanka on bilateral collaboration before returning to Myanmar on October 28.
