Than Swe cuts visa deals with Russia, Belarus

Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe held separate bilateral talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov while attending the Third Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security in Belarus. On October 28, he met Lavrov and discussed strengthening Myanmar-Russia ties in political, economic, trade, investment and people-to-people areas, as well as cooperation in regional and global forums.

The two ministers also confirmed plans for Russian election observers from the Central Election Commission and the Duma to monitor Myanmar’s general elections starting December 28, 2025. They signed a mutual visa exemption agreement and a consultation plan for 2025–2027 between their foreign ministries.

On October 29, U Than Swe met Ryzhenkov to explore deeper cooperation and upcoming agreements in political, economic, cultural and social fields. Earlier that day, he visited Myanmar’s Consulate-General in Minsk, urging the staff to learn the local language, adopt modern technologies such as AI, and serve as effective ambassadors by turning adversaries into friends and deepening ties with allies.
