Myanmar joins climate talks in Brazil
Myanmar’s delegation attended climate discussions in Belem, Brazil, on Wednesday and Thursday as Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi represented Senior General Min Aung Hlaing at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The minister addressed global leaders during plenary sessions at the summit, describing his nation’s forest coverage exceeding 42 percent and acknowledging vulnerability to climate impacts despite rich biodiversity and extensive mangrove ecosystems.
U Khin Maung Yi outlined strategies concentrating on renewable energy expansion, agricultural resilience and forest protection aligned with national climate commitments. He stressed the need for improved access to financing mechanisms, technology sharing and capacity development while confirming support for the summit declaration and plans to participate in the Tropical Forests Forever Facility.
The annual World Climate Summit has convened since 2010 to advance economic and investment solutions for climate mitigation alongside United Nations Framework Convention gatherings, bringing together governments, businesses and organizations to pursue Paris Agreement objectives.
