Myanmar opens polls to media watch

Myanmar will permit local and international journalists to report from polling stations when the country holds its multiparty general election starting on Sunday, Dec. 28. The Union Election Commission said media workers must follow existing laws and professional conduct standards while gathering information.

Local news organizations may send up to four reporters to cover voting in townships within each district. Staff members need authorization letters from their employers and must apply to the district election subcommissions for credentials.

Foreign media outlets must seek approval through the Ministry of Information before the commission issues press passes. Independent journalists require endorsement from established news organizations when submitting applications.

All credential requests must reach authorities by Friday, Dec. 12. The commission will conduct the election in multiple phases across different regions.
