Myanmar reaffirms commitment at NAM ministerial meeting in Uganda
Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe attended the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Kampala, Uganda, on October 15-16, 2025, at the invitation of General Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Foreign Ministers and representatives from NAM member states also participated in the meeting.
During the Plenary Session on October 15, U Than Swe delivered Myanmar’s country statement. He highlighted the global challenges faced by developing countries and warned of risks such as trade wars or World War III due to competition among global powers. He emphasized the importance of NAM’s solidarity to protect the common interests of developing nations and assured Myanmar’s continued commitment to peace, equality, and development.
U Than Swe also spoke about Myanmar’s efforts toward free and fair elections, cooperation on combating online scams and transnational crimes, and ongoing developments in the country, including Rakhine State.
Before the Ministerial Meeting, Myanmar’s Ambassador to Egypt, U Kyaw Tin Shein, led a delegation to attend the Senior Officials Meeting of NAM on October 13-14. The Non-Aligned Movement, founded in 1961, currently has 121 member states, 18 observer countries, and 10 observer organizations. Myanmar is a founding member of NAM.
