Myanmar, Russia seal rights accord

Myanmar’s human rights chief attended a Moscow conference addressing digital rights protection from Oct. 22 to 24. Representatives from more than 60 nations joined the three-day gathering examining technology and civil liberties.

Commission Chairman U Paw Lwin Sein told participants that digital systems require safeguards matching those outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Myanmar passed telecommunications and cybersecurity legislation to protect citizens data and privacy rights.

The chairman signed a cooperation agreement with Russian Human Rights Commissioner Tatiana Moskalkova. Officials discussed joint initiatives and reviewed digital complaint systems that enable citizens to report concerns online.

U Paw Lwin Sein met separately with delegations from Indonesia, Sudan, Nepal and Sri Lanka before returning home on Monday, Oct. 28. The commission operates mobile applications and websites for public engagement.
