Nayeem Hasan left out of Bangladesh squad for Ireland series

Bangladesh spinner Nayeem Hasan faces exclusion from the upcoming home Test series against Ireland despite being the top wicket-taker during the team’s last Test assignment in Sri Lanka three months ago. Team selectors opted for spinners Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, and Hasan Murad instead, citing potential pitch conditions and tactical matchups at Sylhet’s venue.

A selection panel member explained the 14-member squad decision reflected possible starting lineups, noting Sylhet’s surface might favor pairing Taijul with left-arm bowler Murad against Ireland’s predominantly right-handed lineup. Nayeem, who claimed nine wickets at 26 runs apiece in Galle while replacing injured teammate Mehidy, has taken 33 of his 48 Test wickets against right-handed batters. This omission continues a pattern for the 26-year-old cricketer, who has featured in only 14 Tests across eight years despite periodic strong performances. Officials suggested he would benefit from ongoing first-class competition while remaining available for recall.
