New coin rules in Bulgaria allow payments in levs for one more month

Bulgarian consumers face merchant discretion regarding coin acceptance after January 1, with businesses legally permitted to reject payments exceeding 50 coins per transaction despite a month-long lev currency transition period. Consumer advocacy platform We the Consumers recommends exchanging accumulated change at retail locations needing small denominations or through automated kiosk systems that convert coins into store-specific vouchers with time-limited redemption terms.

The Bulgarian National Bank provides fee-free conversion for sorted coins totaling 200 leva or less across denominations ranging from 1 stotinka to 2 leva notes. Amounts exceeding this threshold incur 1.3 percent charges on the surplus when presorted, while unsorted collections face 1.4 percent fees applied to total values, with minimum charges of 2 leva.

Consumer advocates encourage immediate spending of existing coin reserves rather than accumulating additional change during the currency changeover period.
