New Zealand defeated England by four wickets on Sunday in the first match of their three-game series despite a commanding 135-run performance from visiting captain Harry Brook. The hosts chased down a target of 224 in 36.4 overs after Daryl Mitchell scored an unbeaten 78 and Michael Bracewell added 51 runs.
England collapsed to 56-6 within 12 overs at Bay Oval before Brook and Jamie Overton built an 87-run partnership that pushed the total to 223. Zak Foulkes took four wickets while Jacob Duffy claimed three for New Zealand.
Kane Williamson failed to score in his return after six months away from the game. Mitchell earned a reprieve when dropped at 33 and guided his team to victory alongside Mitch Santner, who contributed 27 runs before the hosts sealed their win.
