Nine killed in Dhaka fire at chemical, garment factory

At least nine people were killed and several others injured on Tuesday in a fire at a building in Dhaka’s Shialbari area, which housed a chemical godown and a garment factory. Fire Service official Lt Colonel Tajul Islam Chowdhury confirmed the deaths and said the cause is suspected to be inhalation of toxic gas from a chemical explosion, though the exact cause will be determined after an investigation.

The fire, which broke out around 11:40 am, spread quickly, and seven firefighting units were dispatched to control it. Three people with injuries were taken to a burn institute for treatment. Authorities have warned the public to stay at least 300 yards away from the site due to ongoing risks.

This incident follows another fire on Sunday in Narsingdi, where seven workers were injured in a blast at an unlicensed battery recycling factory.
