No pressure to bring AL into polls says govt
No domestic or foreign entities are pushing Bangladesh’s government to allow the Awami League to participate in the next election. Chief Adviser Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam made this statement on Friday after visiting the July Memorial beside the Nabaganga River in Magura Sadar. The Election Commission has confirmed on multiple occasions that the party cannot contest the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Alam referenced violent incidents from July and August when security forces killed hundreds of students and civilians. He said the Awami League has expressed no regret for these deaths. Officials are revising the Representation of the People Order to prevent unopposed victories like those seen in 2014, when 154 candidates won seats without competition.
Voters will have a reject option if a constituency has a single candidate. All parties accepted a February election date and signed the July Charter in support of this timeline. District Administrator Abdul Kadir and Police Station Chief Ayub Ali attended the memorial ceremony with other local officials.
