NONM walk aids Malawi nursing students
A fundraising walk organized by nursing students in Malawi’s Central Region raised 1.5 million kwacha on August 30, falling short of the 20 million kwacha target. The event supported nine students from Daeyang University, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, and Nkhoma College of Nursing with tuition assistance distributed on October 20. The National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi backed the initiative through its Central Region Students Chapter.
Only 33 participants joined the walk, but organizers describe the campaign as a foundation for future efforts rather than a failure. The event borrowed 624,000 kwacha to cover transportation costs, and 494,000 kwacha remains unpaid. Publicity Secretary Peter Chifulatira emphasized that raising awareness about educational access for healthcare workers holds value beyond immediate financial results.
