Over 1,000 flee Myanmar scam raid
More than 1,000 people escaped from Myanmar into Thailand this week after military forces raided a major scam compound near the border. Thai officials in Tak province reported that 1,049 individuals crossed into Mae Sot district between Wednesday and Friday morning. Most arrivals were Chinese men, though citizens from India, Pakistan, Vietnam, and over a dozen other nations also fled. The exodus followed a military operation at KK Park, a sprawling fraud center where workers conduct online schemes.
Myanmar’s military government announced on Monday that troops had stormed the facility and confiscated Starlink satellite internet equipment. SpaceX disabled more than 2,500 of these devices at scam sites across Myanmar on Wednesday. Experts say some workers at these compounds are trafficking victims while others join voluntarily to earn money in the multibillion-dollar criminal enterprise. These fraud operations have expanded along Myanmar’s poorly controlled borders amid ongoing civil conflict.
Thai authorities plan to screen the border crossers to identify potential trafficking victims. Those not classified as victims could face prosecution for illegal entry. Video footage showed people floating across the river using foam boxes. One Thai woman described armed men pounding on doors and shouting commands in Chinese.
