Pa Ranjith backs Mayilaa for IFFR debut

The Tamil film Mayilaa will make its world premiere at the 55th International Film Festival of Rotterdam in the Bright Future section. Director Semmalar Annam created the picture with support from acclaimed filmmaker Pa Ranjith as presenter and Newton Cinema as producer. The festival runs from Jan. 29 through Feb. 8, 2026.

The story centers on Poongodi, a woman seeking independence and dignity in a small village in Tamil Nadu. Her daughter, Sudar, narrates the tale of quiet resistance against hardship. Melodi Dorcas portrays Mayilaa, while V. Shudar Kodi makes her screen debut as the daughter.

Ranjith praised the director for capturing the experiences of working women from marginalized communities with authentic cinematic language. Producer Anto Chittilappilly described Annam’s approach as emotionally precise with a meaningful social perspective. The cast features Geetha Kailasam, Sathya Maruthani, Auto Chandran, RJ Priyanka, and Janaki Suresh in supporting roles.

Vinoth Janakiraman handled cinematography while A. Sreekar Prasad edited the film. Meenakshi Ilayaraja composed the background score and vocals. Anand Krishnamoorthi designed the sound for the production.
