Police officer declared unfit for trial, sent to psych unit

Assistant Inspector Simbarashe Mandizvidza, who gained attention in August after declaring himself the new police chief, has been committed to Chikurubi Psychiatric Unit indefinitely after being declared mentally unfit to stand trial. Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai made the decision following medical reports from state and private doctors confirming his mental health issues.

Mandizvidza had been charged with transmitting false information, breaching the Road Traffic Act, and causing disaffection among police. These charges stemmed from viral videos he made, including one where he ordered all Chinese nationals in Zimbabwe to leave within 48 hours, and accusations of stealing a police vehicle. His prosecution has been abandoned until he is deemed fit for trial.
