Political storm erupts over Bengal gang-rape report to President

A political controversy erupted on Thursday after West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose submitted a detailed report to President Droupadi Murmu and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs about the alleged gang-rape of a Dalit medical student in Durgapur. The move sparked criticism from opposition parties, who accused the Centre and Governors of “selective activism” in states governed by non-BJP parties.

Congress leaders, including Udit Raj and Imran Masood, questioned why similar actions hadn’t been taken in BJP-ruled states, pointing to crimes in Odisha and Uttar Pradesh. Surendra Rajput, a Congress spokesperson, argued that if Governors in BJP states acted as swiftly as those in Opposition states, the situation would be different. The Samajwadi Party also raised concerns about political bias, with Azam Khan criticizing the Governor’s inaction in Uttar Pradesh.

The incident occurred on October 10, when a second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped after leaving her college in Durgapur.
