Rijeka Gateway opens new era for Croatian logistics

Croatia opened its most advanced container port in Rijeka after finishing a 380 million euro project backed by APM Terminals and ENNA Logic. The Rijeka Gateway terminal received its first commercial vessel, Al Jasrah, months ago and can handle 650,000 containers annually with plans to expand capacity beyond one million containers.

The facility stretches 400 meters along the waterfront, to a depth of 20 meters, and uses remote-controlled cranes powered by renewable energy. Officials hired 250 workers to operate four ship cranes, 15 wheeled cranes and automated systems that position Rijeka ahead of competing Adriatic ports in Trieste and Koper. Public and private investments in roads, railways and port infrastructure totaled 600 million euros.

The 368-meter ship arrived from Egypt on the Asia-Europe shipping route, connecting Rijeka to global supply networks. Peter Corfitsen from Rijeka Gateway said the terminal employs top professionals who maintain standards customers expect from modern port operations.
