Rugby clash strains football schedule

Bangladesh’s National Stadium faces another venue dispute as rugby and football federations clash over scheduling. The National Sports Council approved an international rugby series against Nepal despite objections from the Bangladesh Football Federation, which hosts a women’s tri-nation tournament featuring Malaysia and Azerbaijan immediately afterward.

Football officials expressed concerns about turf damage from rugby’s physical demands, arguing the brief gap between events leaves insufficient time for pitch restoration to international standards. Competition Committee chairman Golam Gauss emphasized that the sport’s intensity could compromise playing conditions. Rugby federation representatives pledged careful field management while acknowledging their limited domestic infrastructure typically restricts matches to alternative venues like Paltan Maidan.

The conflict mirrors earlier complications when archery competitions required relocation to Army Stadium after clashing with men’s football. NSC officials maintained that both federations must cooperate, noting the two-event separation provides adequate maintenance time.
