Shibir AGS candidate Sabbir faces admission quota controversy

Allegations have emerged that SM Salman Sabbir, a candidate for Assistant General Secretary (AGS) in the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) election, was admitted under the ‘dependents’ quota despite not meeting the required marks. Documents suggest that Sabbir, with a score of 32.5, fell short of the 40 marks needed for this quota.

Sabbir declined to address the allegations directly, stating that the timing of the claims was politically motivated and that students would focus on the qualifications of the candidates.

The issue arises amid protests to abolish the dependents’ quota, which led to a delay in the election. Critics argue that Sabbir’s candidacy highlights a contradiction in the Shibir-backed stance against the quota system. Sabbir is running in an election with 305 candidates vying for 23 posts.
