South Asian athletics returns after 17 years
The South Asian Senior Athletics Championship opened on Friday in Ranchi after 17 years without competition. Athletes from across the region gathered at Birsa Munda Stadium in Jharkhand for the three-day tournament, which ended on Sunday. All regional nations except Pakistan sent teams to India for the event.
Bangladesh brought 19 athletes and five officials to compete against more than 200 participants. India fielded 78 competitors while Sri Lanka entered 63 athletes in various track and field disciplines. The ceremony began at 6:30 p.m. local time to launch the regional competition.
Bangladeshi runners competed in multiple races on opening day. Md Ismail and Abdul Motaleb ran the men’s 100-meter first round at 8 p.m. while Sumaiya Dewan entered women’s heats 15 minutes later. Al Amin raced the 5,000 meters at 8:30 p.m., followed by Rinki Biswas in the women’s distance event at 8:50 p.m.
Six Bangladeshi athletes joined the 4×400 meters mixed relay team. Hafizur Rahman, Lusad Islam, Nazimul Haque Roni, Shirin Akhter, Nusrat Jahan Runa, and Barsha Khatun represented their country in the team event. Finals for 100-meter sprints took place at 9:30 p.m. and 9:40 p.m., respectively.
