Spanish police seize 6.5 tonnes of cocaine in ship raid

Spanish authorities confiscated 6.5 tons of cocaine and detained nine suspects after American officials provided intelligence about a vessel near the Canary Islands. Officers discovered the drugs concealed inside a Tanzania-registered ship traveling from Panama toward Vigo in northwestern Spain.

The Drug Enforcement Administration shared critical details that allowed Spanish police to intercept the shipment. Spain serves as a primary entry point for cocaine entering Europe because of its historical connections to Latin American production regions and its southwestern position on the continent.

Officers made their largest cocaine seizure last October when they found 13 tons hidden among banana shipments arriving at Algeciras port in southern Spain. The recent operation demonstrates continued cooperation between American and Spanish law enforcement agencies targeting transatlantic drug trafficking networks.
