Syrian leader seeks Assad extradition from Russia

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday to discuss redefining their relationship. Sharaa, who led the forces that ousted Bashar al-Assad, hoped to push for the extradition of Assad, who has been in Russia since fleeing last December. The two leaders were also expected to talk about Russia’s military bases in Syria, particularly the naval base in Tartus and the airbase at Hmeimim, which have been uncertain since rebel forces took control of parts of the country. Sharaa emphasized Syria’s desire for independence and territorial integrity, while Putin highlighted the long-standing ties between the two nations.
