Tahov demands stable CAP funding for Bulgaria’s agriculture

Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr. Georgi Tahov stressed the importance of maintaining the current budget for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) during a meeting with European Commissioner Christoph Hansen and agricultural producers in Sofia. He called the proposed 20% budget reduction for Bulgaria after 2027 unacceptable, saying it would hinder Bulgaria’s agricultural goals.

Tahov highlighted that Bulgaria’s national debate on the future of CAP began months ago, with active discussions among all stakeholders. He emphasized that the CAP should be aligned with farmers’ needs and maintain the reliable two-pillar model.

The Minister opposed the “Single National Plan” approach, arguing it would complicate decision-making and create uncertainty for farmers. He also emphasized the need for sufficient support for environmental goals, the processing of agricultural products, and investments in irrigation infrastructure.

Tahov further stated that Bulgaria supports the preservation of the N+3 rule for better flexibility and planning and urged a revision of the proposed N+1 rule. The Ministry will continue to defend Bulgaria’s position in discussions with the European Commission and Member States, aiming for a stable, predictable framework for the agricultural sector.
