Taliban pushes trade ties with India, Muttaqi visits
New Delhi’s cozying up to the Taliban is heating up. As FM Amir Khan Muttaqi lands in the Indian capital for a week-long visit, the chatter is all about ramping up trade ties. More than two dozen Afghan traders are set to meet him Monday, pushing for a big trade boost in areas like dry fruits, pharmaceuticals, and infrastructure.
Muttaqi’s press conference on Friday raised eyebrows when he backed trade through Iran’s Chabahar port and called for opening the India-Pakistan Attari-Wagah border. Pakistan’s blockade forces India to rely on the port. Meanwhile, Muttaqi’s meeting with Jaishankar highlighted his pitch to Indian companies for Afghanistan’s rich mineral wealth, including copper and lithium.
But this all comes with a twist: Pakistan launched a cross-border attack on Kabul just as Muttaqi’s plane touched down in Delhi. Looks like Islamabad’s sending a clear message about the Taliban’s new alliance with India.
