Tatmadaw clears illegal trade gates in Myawady

Myanmar’s military has started dismantling dozens of unauthorized border crossings along the Thaungyin River in Myawady Township, where armed groups previously collected fees from smugglers importing goods without paying government taxes. Security forces demolished a large warehouse measuring 120 feet by 60 feet at Subgate-35 on Friday morning after regaining control of the area from terrorist organizations that operated illegal trade gates.

Officials reported that clearing operations began on October 31 at 30 unauthorized checkpoints, with demolition teams already completing work at nine locations, including Gate-19, Kyaukphya Gate, and Gate-18. The clearance extended to several outposts and decommissioned crossing points along the river border.

Residents noted that the neighboring country maintains official checkpoints near these illegal routes without losing tax revenue, while Myanmar suffers significant losses as importers bypass legitimate government trade zones. Authorities emphasized that merchandise should enter only through designated legal channels to prevent revenue shortfalls and discourage smuggling activities that undermined state finances.
