Tribute paid to language hero Ahmed Rafiq

A memorial committee honored language movement activist Ahmed Rafiq on Friday at Bangla Academy in Dhaka. Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury led the tribute event, which featured wreath-laying and musical performances in honor of the scholar who championed Bengali literature throughout his career. Rafiq worked behind the scenes in the 1952 Language Movement and spent decades promoting cultural awareness across Bangladesh.

The 96-year-old researcher died on Oct. 2 at a capital hospital after receiving medical treatment. Munir Shiraj from the Ahmed Rafiq Foundation noted that the activist earned major recognitions, such as the Amar Ekushey Padak and the Bangla Academy Award, for his literary scholarship. Rafiq conducted extensive studies of the poets Jibanananda Das and Kazi Nazrul Islam while examining the evolution of Bengali verse from the 1930s through the 1980s. Speakers urged attendees to honor his legacy by working toward an equitable society free from discrimination.
