Truck bans set for Bulgaria’s busiest roads on 2026 holidays

Bulgaria’s Road Infrastructure Agency has proposed restricting trucks exceeding 12 tons from major highways during the 2026 national holidays to improve passenger vehicle flow and reduce collision risks. The draft order targets the Trakia, Hemus and Struma motorways, plus a section of Road I-1 between Simitli and Kresna junctions during extended holiday weekends.

Heavy vehicle bans would take effect across nine holiday periods, including National Holiday on March 3, Easter in April, Labor Day and multiple spring celebrations in May, plus September independence observances and December festivities. Restrictions typically span afternoon through evening hours on days preceding holidays and mornings on return travel dates, with final-day limitations applying only to Sofia-bound traffic.

Exemptions cover emergency assistance vehicles, buses, hazardous materials transports, livestock carriers and perishable goods haulers. Alternative republican road network routes remain available for affected commercial drivers during enforcement periods.
