Trump brokers ceasefire deal between Thailand and Cambodia

President Donald Trump joined leaders from Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysia on Saturday to formalize a ceasefire between the Southeast Asian neighbors after months of border fighting. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet signed the agreement with Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the first stop of Trump’s Asia tour.

The accord requires Cambodia to free 18 prisoners of war and establishes regional observers to monitor the disputed border zone. Both nations must remove heavy artillery from conflict areas and clear landmines from the boundary regions. The countries agreed to an initial truce in late July but have accused each other of breaking the terms since then.

Analysts say a complete peace treaty between Thailand and Cambodia remains unfinished despite this progress. Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, who helped negotiate the deal through ASEAN, said the framework aims to prevent further ceasefire breaches. Trump called the signing a major achievement before continuing his regional trip to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.
