Trump kicks off Asia tour with trade deals and ceasefire agreement
President Donald Trump arrived in Malaysia on Sunday to begin an Asia tour that produced trade agreements with Cambodia and Thailand, as well as a minerals agreement with his host nation. The president said talks with Chinese officials established favorable conditions for ending the tariff dispute between Washington and Beijing when he meets President Xi Jinping later this week in South Korea.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that China agreed to postpone rare-earth export limits for one year and to restart American soybean purchases after two days of negotiations in Kuala Lumpur. Trump helped broker a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia following their border clashes. The president plans stops in Japan before the summit with Xi at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation gathering in Busan.
Trump said he remains willing to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un if the opportunity emerges. South Korean officials suggested such an encounter could happen as both leaders expressed interest in renewed contact. The president called Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi a successor to his late friend Shinzo Abe ahead of their scheduled meeting.
