Trump to witness Thailand-Cambodia peace deal at ASEAN summit
U.S. President Donald Trump will attend a peace agreement signing between Thailand and Cambodia at the upcoming ASEAN summit, Malaysia’s foreign minister announced Tuesday. The conflict between the two nations, which began in July, resulted in over 40 deaths and displaced around 300,000 people. A ceasefire, partly mediated by Trump, has since been violated multiple times by both sides.
Trump will visit Malaysia on October 26 to attend the summit in Kuala Lumpur, where the U.S. and Malaysia aim to broker a more extensive ceasefire agreement. The proposed deal includes removing landmines and withdrawing military forces from the border. Thailand has set conditions before accepting further U.S. involvement, including Cambodia’s withdrawal of heavy weapons and cracking down on online scams.
