U.S. pulls back troops, NATO on edge

The United States plans to withdraw some troops from NATO’s eastern flank, Romania’s defense ministry said on Wednesday. About 700 American service members will leave, though 1,000 will stay in Romania. Washington cited changes in global strategy and said the military alliance has grown stronger in the region.

The reduction affects areas from the Baltic nations through Poland and Romania near the Black Sea. These zones became vital after Russia attacked Ukraine in 2022. Military analysts warn that fewer American forces might encourage Moscow to act more boldly, even as European nations work to strengthen their defenses.

The shift reflects America’s focus on Asia and pressure for allies to spend more on security. Poland, Romania and Baltic countries may now boost their militaries. The timing raises concerns about whether NATO can maintain its deterrent power against Russian aggression near Ukraine’s borders.
