UN calls for swift rebuild of Syria

Syria requires immediate reconstruction after 14 years of conflict to stabilize the nation and surrounding areas, according to United Nations Development Programme deputy representative Rawhi Afaghani. The World Bank estimated this week that rebuilding expenses could reach 216 billion dollars following the civil war that killed more than 500,000 people and destroyed vital infrastructure. Governors across Syria reported urgent needs for housing, schools, medical facilities, electricity and water systems.

More than one million refugees have returned from abroad, while nearly two million internally displaced citizens have returned to their original communities. Afaghani warned that returning populations strain existing transportation, education and food distribution networks. Many Syrians found their homes destroyed or occupied by others upon arrival.

The official noted that inadequate infrastructure and employment opportunities discourage potential returnees from Europe who possess valuable technical skills. Unexploded weapons scattered throughout rubble piles complicate cleanup operations nationwide. Afaghani expressed concern that infrastructure pressure might trigger community conflicts between residents and newcomers.

Swift reconstruction could create stability and attract skilled workers from European nations to help restore the country. These experienced professionals could benefit regional economic development and peace efforts. Most returnees came from difficult conditions in Jordan and Lebanon rather than from European destinations.
