Yunus cancels Saudi trip over politics

Bangladesh’s chief adviser, Muhammad Yunus, withdrew from a planned trip to Saudi Arabia to focus on domestic governance matters. The Nobel laureate had accepted an invitation from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to attend the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh from Oct. 27 through Oct. 30. Special envoy Lutfey Siddiqi will represent the South Asian nation at the investment summit instead.

Government offices confirmed the schedule change stems from pressing political tasks at home. Yunus prioritized work on the July Accord and preparation for national elections over international engagement. Foreign ministry officials and the chief adviser’s staff jointly announced the altered arrangements.

The Future Investment Initiative attracts global leaders and financial executives to discuss economic development strategies. Siddiqi holds the title of special envoy for international affairs under the interim administration. Bangladesh will maintain its presence at the conference through the delegation headed by the appointed representative.
