University staff take pay dispute to Parliament after 4-year deadlock
Lecturers and non-teaching staff in public universities have taken their ongoing dispute over unpaid salary agreements to Parliament, seeking urgent intervention to end a four-year standoff. The University Academic Staff Union (Uasu) and Kenya University Staff Union (Kusu) presented a petition outlining frustrations over the unfulfilled 2017–21 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The unions claim that the government owes them Sh16.57 billion, including pensions and liabilities, while the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has calculated the amount at Sh8.8 billion. Despite court rulings in their favor, the unions allege the government has not fully paid the arrears, with universities failing to clear the dues. They are also demanding negotiations for the 2025–29 CBA to begin immediately.
The petition has been referred to the Departmental Committee on Education, which is set to meet the National Treasury and the Ministry of Education next week. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba maintains that only Sh624 million is owed and that the government is open to resolving the matter.
